He was the son of John and Sarah Ann Slaney and the brother of Florence, Frank, William and Lucy Slaney. In 1911 they lived at 258 Mansfield Road Sutton in Ashfield.
He was a bricklayer's labourer.

10th Bn Alexandra Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment)
Private Frederick James Slaney, served with “B” Company, 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 12th November 1916. He is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery.
