Herbert was born in Calverton in 1885 the son of James and Anne Turton .The 1901 census shows the family living at 4 Main Street,Calverton at this time Herbert is 16 yrs his father James born 1854 is a butcher and his wife Anne born 1858 is a dress maker,Herbert has 3 siblings.By the 1911 census Herbert is shown as being 27 yrs the head of his own family and a butcher he has been married for 4 yrs and is living on Main Street,Calverton with his wife Mary born 1885 at Bolsover, Derbyshire and their 4 children Leslie born 1907, Herbert born 1908 ,Henry born 1910 and Frank who is under one month old.

A pension record has been found for Herbert Turton which shows he originally joined the Army on 9th April 1908 at Calverton, at this time he was 24 yrs of age and a butcher employed by his father .His service number is 735 and he is serving with the 8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters .On the 5th August 1914 he is discharged after being found unfit on mobilization. He had home service of 6yrs and 126 days his service dates being 9/4/08-6/8/14.The record also states his wife to be Mary. He must have however later re joined the army as he is shown as being killed in action France & Flanders
His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate memorial, Ypres, Belgium
