James Neal was born in 1886 at Stanton Hill the son of William a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Neal née Fox, James married Mary Ellen Oliver (born 15th June 1887) in 1907 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 7 Stoneyford Lane, Sutton in Ashfield and had 2 children, Charlotte born 18th March 1909 and James Henry born 30th May 1914. In 1911 the family lived at 36 New Street, Sutton in Ashfield, James is 25 yrs and a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ellen 23 yrs and their daughter Charlotte 2 yrs of age. Commencing 13th November 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week. His widow re married on 28th March 1917 to John Betts a coal miner.

Private James Neal enlisted at Sutton-in-Ashfield and went to France 23rd December 1915. He was killed in action, 14th February 1916, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Panel 39 and 41.
