He was the son of Dr William (late RAMC) and Hannah Rainsbury and the brother of Kathleen Josephine, Brian Victor, Norah Marjorie, Mary Eleanor Imogen, John Joseph and Cedric Rainsbury. They lived at ' Kilcrenagh' Frackley Road Stanton Hill.
Training for the priesthood at Trinity College, Dublin. Had attended Queen Elizabeth School 15/01/1912 to July 1915.
