Herbert was born in Brigg in 1897 and was the son of Son of Frederick Crisp, a railway porter of 14, Cosgrove St., Cleethorpes, Lincs. In the 1911 census when he is 14 years of age he is living with his grandparents Charles and Mary Crisp at 4 Bescaby Street, Retford he is an errand boy.
He was in the employ of Messrs Cash and Co., Retford for about eight years prior to enlisting

Lance Corporal
2/4th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Herbert enlisted in Sheffield on December 12th 1915 and was drafted to France in January 1916 and served with the 2/4th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment , he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917 his body was never recovered/identified and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Lance Corpl H Crisp Retford Times 22 June 1917 Official information has been received by Mr Fed Crisp of Cleethorpes, that Lance Corpl H Crisp was posted as wounded and missing on May 3rd. Lance Corpl Crisp enlisted in the York and Lancs Regiment on Dec 12th 1915 and was drafted to France in January 1916. He was attached to the Lewis Gun Section. Previous to joining the Forces, Lance Corpl H Crisp was in the employ of Messrs Cash and Co., Retford for about eight years. He is 20 years of age and was bought up by his grandparents at 4 Bescoby Street, Retford. He was a member of the East Retford Church Recreation Room, Churchgate and at one time sang in the church choir.
