He was the son of James and Hannah Franks and the brother of Hilda Nellie, James Edwin, George, Cyril, Ethel May and Jack Stewart Franks. In 1911 they lived at Portland Villas Nuncar Road Kirkby in Ashfield.
He was a pit pony driver underground in 1911.
