Sidney Stewart Franks was born in 1895 the son of James a coal miner contractor and Hannah Franks née Stewart and the brother of Hilda Nellie, James Edwin, George, Cyril, Ethel May and Jack Stewart Franks. In 1911 they lived at Portland Villas Nuncargate Road Kirkby in Ashfield. James was born in 1863 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Hannah Stewart was born in 1872 at Coleorton, Leicestershire, married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 7 children.
He was a pit pony driver underground in 1911.

2nd Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Sydney Franks, enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, served with C Company, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and went to France on 3rd May 1915. Killed in action on 23rd July 1915 whilst on digging fatigues at the Yser canal bank near Ypres, Belgium. He is buried in Potijze Burial Ground Cemetery CI.6
