John Newcombe

John Foulds Newcombe was born in 1890 at Nottingham and was the son of John Fisher Newcombe a druggist porter and his first wife the late Ann Newcombe née Foulds of 85, Woodborough Rd., Nottingham. His father John Fisher Newcombe was born in 1857 at Shelford and his mother Ann Foulds was born in 1855 also at Shelford, she died in 1897 at Nottingham aged 41 yrs, they were married in 1882 at St Saviours Church Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Mable Jane b1883, Edith Ann b1884, Sarah Elizabeth b1887 and John Foulds b1890 all were born in Nottingham. Following the death of his mother in 1897 his father went on to marry Kate Lines in 1898 they went on to have the following children, Gertrude b1898 Gladys b1901, Evelyn b1905 and Winnie b1907, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Wellington Terrace, Wellington Street, Nottingham and are shown as John Fisher Newcombe 55 yrs a druggist porter , he is living with his second wife Kate 34 yrs and his children, Kate 34 yrs a cigar maker, Gertrude 12 yrs, Gladys 10 yrs, Evelyn 6 yrs and Winnie 4yrs. In the same 1911 census John is shown as being 21 yrs of age , single and a serving soldier in the 1st battalion the Border Regiment , in barracks in Burma.

He was a career soldier

Private Corporal John Newcombe, M.M., [1] was a career soldier enlisting at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Border Regiment, he is shown on the 1911 census as being in barracks in Burma with his battalion. He landed with the battalion on X Beach, Cape Helles, on 25th April 1915. He died of wounds on 24th April 1917. Buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, [1] Military Medal was announced in the 'London Gazette,' 21st September 1916.
