Bertram Joseph Thorpe was born in 1895 the son of William a school caretaker and Jane Thorpe née Lawrence of Schoolhouse, Church Street, Kirkby in Ashfield. William Thorpe was born in 1868 at Kirkby in Ashfield, Jane Lawrence was born in 1872 at Gainsborough, married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, Jane had brought a child to the marriage Daisy Lawrence who was adopted by William, they had another son Percival William born 1897. In 1911 they lived at School House Church Street Kirkby in Ashfield. Bertram married Hilda Vann (born 8th February 1895) in 1915 the marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 24 Edward Street, Kirkby in Ashfield, they had a son Douglas Neville Vann Thorpe born 12th January 1917 Commencing 18th November 1918 his widow Hilda was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
In 1911 he was a blacksmith's apprentice.

Private Bertram Thorpe enlisted on 10th November 1914 at Mansfield, giving his age as 19 yrs and 21 days and his occupation as that of a motor driver, he was posted with the service number 18855 to The Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was discharged from the Army on 25th January 1915 as being 'not likely to become an efficient soldier'. He later re enlisted or was called up and served as a gunner with the Royal Field Artillery he was killed in action on 29th April 1918 and is buried at Klein Vierstaat British Cemetery, Belgium.
