Harold was born at Arnold in 1899, the son of William and Elizabeth Wells of 46 West Street, Arnold, Nottinghamshire. He was raised in the town and educated at the British School on Front Street. In the 1911 Census he is shown as being 12 yrs of age, a scholar, born in Arnold and living at 46 West Street with his family, father William born 1872, mother Elizabeth also born 1872, and 3 sisters, his parents had been married 17 yrs in 1911 and had 7 children during their marriage only 4 of whom survived, the other 3 dying during infancy. He worked at Allen Solley & Co in Arnold .

He enlisted into the Army at Hucknall, Nottingham joining the West Yorkshire Regiment, he was killed in action near Langemarck on 16th August 1917, he is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium
