Trevor was born in 1891 in Retford and was the son of Charles Henry a wheelwright and Elizabeth Holliday. (nee Scarborough) Charles and Elizabeth had a large family of eleven children, however only 9 survived till 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at Bettisons Wharf, Retford , Trevor is 21 years of age , single and a butcher. He met and married Clara Snushall, they married at St Saviours Church, Moorgate, Retford on 26th December 1912 and were living at 7 Prince of Wales Street,Retford at the time, they later had a daughter Gladys Mary born in 1914

Trevor served with D battery 261st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed on 21st February 1918 while with his battery at Bailleul a few miles from Arras. He was killed whilst on a sunken path next to a road when it was shelled by the Germans, he is buried in Roclincourt Military Cemetery, Pas-De-Calais, France grave reference V A 8
Gunner Trevor John Holliday Retford Times 22nd March 1918 article read :- Gunner Trevor John Holliday Royal Field Artillery has made the great sacrifice, Gunner Holliday was serving with D battery of 261st Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 21st February 1918, along with his officer. Prior to joining the Army in April 1916, he was employed at Boots Cash Chemist and the Nelson Meat Shop and lived at 7 Protestant Place, Queen Street, Retford. He was twenty seven years of age and was married to Clara and they had a little girl. At the time of his death Gunner Trevor had three brothers serving; Sergeant W Holliday in the Royal Garrison Artillery, who was based in Salonika; Pte Walter Holliday with the Sherwood Foresters in France; and Pte james Holliday of the Highland Light Infantry, who was wounded in France, eventually returning to his unit. He was also a cousin of Clarence Percival Holliday Lance Corporal 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment who died on 6th October 1915 in Gallipoli Additional information and photos kindly provided by Liz Ashforth (granddaughter of Trevor)

  • This is the place where Trevor was shot, somewhat deeper at that time and no trees on the right and I think it was bitterly cold and snowy that February day.  Bailleul, the village to which this field belonged, was totally ruined and had to be re-built.  As indeed was Roclincourt itself.
