Born 1887 at Carlton to George and Mary Butcher, a General labourer. In 1891 George, Mary and six children were living on Windmill Row, Carlton, just off Carlton Hill. By 1901 the family were still there but had increased as nine children were now living in the house. Charles had now left school and as working as a labourer in the Brickyard. George died in 1903 and Mary in 1906 leaving several very young children to be looked after by their relatives. In 1908 Charles married Olive Annie Porter and they moved to No 17 Carlton Hill, Carlton. In 1909 they had a daughter Eva. Following the death of her husband Olive remarried in 1919 to George Ridley.

Charles enlisted at Nottingham. He arrived in France 31 July 1915 and was killed in action 18 July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. he was eligible for the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals
