Albert Melville Allsop

Albert Melville known as Melville was born in 1894 in Leabrooks and was the son of John a labourer at a colliery and Eliza Allsop née Hencliffe. His father John was born in 1865 in New Willington Derbyshire and his mother Elizabethg Hencliffe was born in 1869 in Alfreton, they were married in 1893 in Derby and had 7 children, sadly 1 of which died in infancy prior to 1911, their children were Albert Melville b1894 Leabrooks, Arthur b1897 Hucknall (killed in action 15/6/1917), Leonard b1905 Nuncargate, Violetta b1905 Nuncargate, and Hilda Allsop b1909 Alfreton In the 1911 census they lived at 9 Barricks Lane, Stoneford Lane, Stanton Hill and are shown as John 46 yrs a labourer in a collier he is living with his wife Eliza 46 trs and their children Albert 16 yrs , no occupation, Albert 14 yrs no occupation, Leonard 6 yrs scholar, Violetta 5 yrs scholar and Hilda 2 yrs . The family later lived at at 5 Club Row Bagthorpe , Nottinghamshire

In 1911 he had no occupation.

Salt Box Row, Bagthorpe Notts

Private Melville Allsop, enlisted on 7th October 1915 at Hucknall he gave his age as 21 yrs and 61 days , his occupation as collier and his address as Salt Box Row, Bagthorpe, Jacksdale, Nottinghamshire his next of kin was his father John Henry Alsop of the same address. He served with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Welbeck Rangers). He was declared a deserter on 5th January 1916, it appears he had enlisted in another regiment, for on 5th February 1916 his service record states: “Rejoins from 3rd Seaforth Highlanders. Trial dispensed with.” He landed in France on 6th March 1916 and was killed in action on 6th May 1916 he is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue

His brother Arthur served with the 12th battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps he was killed in action on 15th June 1917.
