Thomas Heathcote was born in 1882 was the son of John a coal miner hewer and Mary Heathcote née Hollis of 44 Sandy Lane, Mansfield. John was born in 1859 and Mary Ann Hollis was born in 1858 both were born in Sutton in Ashfield, married in 1877 at Mansfield they went on to have 12 children sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, Thomas married Mabel Ward (born 14th December 1891) in 1910 at Mansfield, they had two children Phyllis, born 15th June 1911 and Herbert, born 9th April 1913 they lived on Bentinck Street, Mansfield. In 1911 Thomas was living at 18 Haywood Street, Mansfield, he is 29 yrs of age and is a domestic groom, he is living with his wife Mabel 20 yrs of age.

Enlisted in 1899 aged 17 and had served in South Africa during the Boer War. Re-enlisted on 08/01/1915 and was in France from 08/02/1915. Awarded the South Africa Medal.
