William Allan Brodie was born in 1888 at Hucknall and was the son of James a tailor and Edna Brodie née Holdsworth of 55 Watnall Road, Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1862 in Kilbrine, Scotland and his mother Edna Holdsworth was born in 1867 in Hucknall Torkard, they were married in 1887, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Hucknall, Allan b1888, Agnes Margaret b1896, Jessie b1903 and Doris Brodie b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 55 Watnall Road Hucknall Torkard Nottingham and are shown as James 49 yrs a tailor , he is living with his wife Edna 44yrs and their children Allan 23 yrs a tailor, Maggie 15 yrs a blouse maker, Jessie 8 yrs and Doris 6 yrs
He was a tailor in the family business.

Second Lieutenant William Allan Brodie initially served with service number 13085 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in the Balkans theatre of war on 1st July 1915. He was commissioned on 31st July 1917 into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and served with the 3rd battalion , he was attached 16th battalion when he died of wounds on 13th May 1918. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, grave reference B.4.29
