Harold William was born in 1895 at Hucknall and was the son of Charles a colliery labourer and Jane Ann Garratt née Bates of West Hill House, Chesterfield Road, Mansfield . His father Charles was born in 1859 at Hugglestone, Leicestershire and his mother Jane Ann Bates was born in 1857 at Pipe Hill, Staffordshire, they were married in 1880 at Hugglestone, Leicestershire and went on to have 8 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Hannah Mary b1881 Hugglestone, Emma Jane b1882 Donnington Le Heath Leicestershre, Ethel May b1886 Hagley Hay, Staffordshire, Charles Ernest b1889 Walsall Wood, Staffordshire and Harold William b1895 Hucknall. In the 1901 census he is living with his parents, a brother and three sisters at 129, New Houghton, Pleasley, Notts. By 1911 his three sisters have left and the family are living at West Hill House, Chesterfield Road, Mansfield. He is employed in a cotton mill as an under piercer aged 16 years.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private Harold William Garratt enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Hucknall. He served in 'A' Company 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th September 1916 and is buried at Lebucquiere Communal Cemetery Extension
