James Cartledge Hooley was born in 1879 at Codnor the son of John a carpenter and Sarah Hooley née Cartledge. John Hooley was born in 1855 and Sarah Cartledge was born in 1856. James married Sarah Jane Newham (born 14th September 1881) in 1900 at Mansfield, they lived at 23 Parliament Street, Sutton in Ashfield, they had the following children, Alice born 4th April 1902, Mary born 14th September 1904, Marian Dorothy born 2nd March 1907, Lillian born 28th August 1910 and James Cartledge born 19th August 1915. In 1911 the family were living at 23 Parliament Street, Sutton in Ashfield, James Cartledge is 32 yrs and is a coal miner hewer Commencing 7th May 1917 his widow Sarah was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week.
He was a coal miner hewer working for the Butterley Coal Company.

Private James Cartledge Hooley enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Sutton in Ashfield. He was killed in action on 20th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
