Leonard Horton was born in 1894 at Arnold the son of William a colliery bricklayer and Sarah Horton (née Mellors. William James was born in 1863 at St Neots, Huntingdonshire and died in 1918. Sarah Mellors was born in 1864 at Blyth, Northumberland. Married in 1883 at Nottingham, they had the following children - George Henry b.1884 Bulwell, John William b.1886 Bulwell, Sarah Jane b.1888 Nottingham, Ann b.1890 Bulwell and Leonard b.1894 Arnold. In 1911, they lived at 60, Bradford Street, Bulwell, Nottingham. George Henry was an unemployed gardener, Sarah a cane worker and Leonard a brewery drayman. Leonard married Ruth Bradshaw (born 26th July 1895) in 1913 at Nottingham. They lived at 48 Thurman Street, Hucknall and had the following children, John William born 25th January 1914 and Lilian born 14th February 1918.With effect from 25/4/191, Ruth received a weekly pension of 25s/5d.

1/6th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Lance Corporal Leonard Horton enlisted at Arnold, he served with the 1/6th Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 25th June 1915 and died on 23rd October 1918 of broncho pneumonia and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extention Rouen
His brother Sergeant 13968 John William Horton enlisted at Wath on Dearne, Yorkshire whilst residing at Mexborough, he served with the 8th service battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 7th June 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
