He was the son of William Henry and Mary Ann Hickling. He was the brother of Lillian (born 1887), Horace (born 1889), Gladys Maude (born 1902) and Herbert Hickling (born 1904). In 1901 the family lived at 20 Preston Terrace Bunbury Street and later 17 Glapton Road (both Meadows Nottingham).
He was a gardener's boy who became a professional soldier.

Life Guards
Hickling was sent to France at the start of the war with 'D' Squadron and was involved in heavy fighting during the First Battle of Ypres. He was killed in action on November 20, 1914. His body was not recovered. Menin Gate Memorial Panel 3
