Henry Liley, who was a carter who worked on farms, married to Sarah Harvey and lived in Collingham, Notts, where they bought up their six children: Hannah, Elizabeth, William, Nellie, James and Ethel. James, who was born in 1890, was working and living in, employed as a horseman on farmer William Hazzard’s farm at Southwell in 1911. After this date he moved to Welbeck, Notts, possibly as an estate worker.

9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private James Liley enlisted at Welbeck whilst residing at South Collingham, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment at Gallipoli and in Egypt. He moved to France with the battalion in July 1916. The battalion took part successfully in the Battle of Thiepval but at a high cost in casualties. James was one of these and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
