Arthur John Maltby was born in 1879 at Nottingham and was the son of Daniel and Rose Maltby. Arthur married his wife Frances Spencer in 1897 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 3 Clayton Street, Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Arthur b1898, Lilian born 15th November 1900, John born 15th September 1903, Doris born 1st August 1904, William born 7th August 1907, Bernard born 16th March 1910, James born 4th May 1911 , Frances born 1913 and Faith born 3rd September 1915, all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 3 Clayton Street Queen's Walk Nottingham and were shown as Arthur 32 yrs a lace dresser, he is living with his wife Frances 34 yrs and their children Arthur 13 yrs a scholar, Lillian 10 yrs a scholar, John 8 yrs a scholar, Doris 6 yrs, William 3 yrs and Bernard 1 year old. His widow was awarded a pension of 31 shillings a week to commence on 9th October 1916.
He was a lace dresser in 1911.

Private Arthur John Maltby enlisted in Nottingham, he served with the Connaught Rangers, He died in the military hospital at Ferney, County Cork, Ireland on 4th April 1916 of tuberculosis of the lung. His body was returned to his family and buried in Wilford (St. Wilfrid) Churchyard, Nottingham.
In memoriam published 4th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MALTBY. – In loving memory of Pte. Arthur Maltby, Connaught Rangers, died in Ireland, April 4th, 1916. Silently mourned. – Loving brother and sister, Jack and Kitty. Above is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages small town great war Hucknall 1914-1918.
