He was the son of William Harriss and Mary Pritchett. In 1891 he lived with his parents and siblings - Henry Harris, Emma Groves, Lois Mary and Walter – at Scarrington. His father was listed as an agricultural labourer. Later siblings were Annie and Nellie. In 1901, he lived at White House, Scarrington with Thomas and Sarah Crampton. In 1911, he lived with his wife and children – Alfred, Sydney and new born son – at Scarrington.
He was a farm servant.

James Pritchett enlisted at Nottingham in January 1915 and is buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Grave Reference 3.A.24
His brother 85266 Gunner Arthur Harold Pritchett served with 22nd Divisional Ammunition Column in Salonika and his brother R/20902 CQMS Henry Pritchett with the Army Service Corps.
