Thomas William Salt was born in 1897 he was the son of Richard a farmer and Mary Salt née Davies of Hickling, Melton Mowbray. Richard was born in 1849 at Stanton by Dale, Mary Davies was born in 1853 at Hickling they were married in 1881 at Derby, they went on to have 5 children, John Arthur b1883, Albert Davies b1885, Richard Ernest b 1889, Mary 1890 and Thomas William b1897. In 1911 the family are living in Hickling, Richard 62 yrs is a farmer, he is living with his wife Mary 58 yrs and 4 of their children including Thomas William 14 yrs of age working on his fathers far.

13th Bn York and Lancaster Regiment
Private Thomas William Salt was called up for service on 16th June 1916, he was 19 yrs and 243 days old and he was a cowman on a farm, he reported to the army depot at Derby where he was posted to the North Staffordshire regiment with the service number 6328. He was transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment on 13th October 1916. He embarked from Folkestone on 30th March 1918 disembarking the same day at Boulogne and died of wounds on 12th April 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
