Alfred Shepherd was born in 1896 he was the son of Matthew a woodcutting machinist and Harriet Hannah Shepherd née Hudson and the brother of Hilda Shepherd b1899. Matthew was born in 1872 at Sheffield, Harriett Hannah Hudson was born in 1874 at Nottingham they were married in 1895 at Nottingham. In 1911 the family lived at 17 Wilson's Place Woolpack Lane Nottingham.
Member of 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). At the time of the 1911 census Alfred was an office boy.

Alfred Shepherd attested at Nottingham on 15 March 1915 giving his age as 19 years 10 months but, born A/M/J/ 1896, he was actually only 18 years 10 months. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.. Buried: Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers, France. Plot 1, Row D, Grave 23.
