John William Shipman was born in 1884 the grandson of Luke a retired coal miner hewer and Ann Sarah Shipman, the son of William Shipman born 1864 Ripley a coal miner hewer and brother of George Henry Shipman born 1890 Selston. In 1911 they lived at 32 Portland Road Selston.
He was a miner (hewer).
