William Barber Green married his wife Catherine Raynor (born 1st August 1897) in 1914 at Nottingham they lived at 4 Alfred Square Alfred Street Radford Nottingham. They had two children, Fred William Barber Green born 6th January 1915 and Winifred Catherine Barber Green born 12th November 1916. When he enlisted in 1915 he was living at 65 Salisbury Street, Radford, Nottingham. Following his death his widow Catherine was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week which commenced on 27th August 1917, she was living at 70 Denman Street, Radford.

Private William Barber Green attested at Nottingham on 9th December 1915, he was 21 yrs of age and was living at 65 Sailsbury Street, Radford, he was a wood sawyer he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised for war on 18th April 1916 and reported to the Derby Depot and served with the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France 2nd August 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his chest 3rd September 1916 and was sent to 16th General Hospital, Le Treport, France. On recovery, he was transferred to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and joined them on the 30th September 1916. He suffered gunshot wounds to his knee 24th January 1917 and died, 16th February 1917, age 22, after amputation at St. John's Ambulance Hospital, Etaples, France.He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
