James Atterbury was born in 1896 at Hucknall and was the son of the late James a coal miner hewer and Jane Ann Atterbury née Briggs of 2 Levertons Row, Hankin Street, Hucknall. His father James was born in 1866 at Breedon, Leicestershire, he died in 1905 aged 39 yrs his mother Jane Ann Briggs was born in 1871 at Staveley they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children Elizabeth b1892, William Henry b1893, James b1896, Mary b1898, Annie b1900, Thomas b1903 and Eliza Ann Atterbury b1906, all were born at Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Levertons Row, Hankin Street, Hucknall and are shown as Jane Ann 40 yrs a widow, she is livng with her children, Elizabeth 19 yrs a general domestic servant, William 18 yrs a colliery banksman, James 15 yrs a colliery banksman, Mary 13 yrs a sweeper upper in a cigar factory, Annie 11 yrs a scholar, Thomas 8 yrs a scholar and Eliza Ann 5 yrs of age. .
In 1911 he was a colliery banksman.

Private James Atterbury enlisted at Hucknall, he initially served with the service number 105668 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he later served with the 7th battalion Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) he was killed in action on 23rd August 1918 and is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery,Becordel-Becourt, , Somme, France.
No BMD birth record so he may have been 23 at death.
