Alfred Goddard Elliott

Son of George and Susan Elliott, of 3, Newark St., Nottingham. Born at Sneinton (CWGC). At the time of the 1911 census the family was at 3 Newark Street; George and Susan had five children, Ada (21), Mabel (19), Jessy (13), Harold (11) and Ernest George (8, b. 1894).

Member 2nd Nottingham Company Boys' Brigade (Dakeyne Street Lads' Club). In 1911 he was an estate agent's clerk. His occupation on enlistment was given as accountant.

3 Newark Street, Nottingham

Attested 9 December 1915 aged 22 years 7 months he gave his occupation as that of an accountant. He was put to the Army Reserve on 10 December 1915 . He was mobilised on 29th January 1916 at Derby when he was 22 yrs and 210 days old, he gave his next of kin as George Elliott 3 Newark St ,Nottingham , his father. He went to Ireland with his battalion during the Irish Rebellion 1916, on 26th April whilst he and his party were attacking 25 Northumberland Road, Dublin , being held by the rebels he was wounded and died later the same day as a result of these wounds , he had served only 90 days in the army . He was returned to his family and buried in Nottingham Church Cemetery (grave ref Oak 3010) He was one of the 31 men of the Sherwood Foresters who died during the Irish Rebellion 1916.

His family placed notices in the local press to his memory giving his date of death as 28th April 1916. All official sources give it as 26th April 1916. Death notice published 11th May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELLIOTT. – Died of wounds, April 28th, Private A. G. Elliott, Sherwoods, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Elliott, 3, Newark-street, Sneinton, aged 23 years. Faithful to his Heavenly King, faithful to his earthly King.” “ELLIOTT. – In loving memory of Alfred Goddard Elliott, who died in Ireland, April 28th, 1916 [sic]. Ever in our thoughts. – Mother, father, sisters, and brothers. In memoriam published 27th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “ELLIOTT. – In loving memory of Alfred G.
