William Harvey was born in 1890 at Nottingham and was the son of William Harvey and Deborah Hannah Martindale Harvey née Spencer. His father William Harvey was born in 1863 at Nottingham and his mother Deborah Hannah Martindale Spencer was born in 1859 at Sleaford, Lincolnshire. They were married in 1885 at Nottingham and went on to have 5 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were Thomas Martindale b1886, William b1890, Olive b1892 and Ernest b1895 who were all born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census his parents and two of his siblings were living at 9 Davis Street, Nottingham, and shown as William Harvey 48 yrs a brush maker, his wife Deborah 49 yrs, Olive 18 yrs a neckwear maker and Ernest 15 yrs a hosiery puller. William had married Ada Fulbrook in 1910 (J/A/S Nottingham). Ada was the daughter of Harry and Emily Fulbrook and born in Aston, Warwickshire, on 23 April 1894. Her family was living in Aston in 1901 but then moved to Nottingham and in 1911 they were living at 19 Crown Street, Nottingham. Also in the household were Ada (17), William (20), who worked at a brewery, and their daughter Elsie (b. 2 November 1910). William and Ada later had William b. 5 January 1913, Lilian b. 26 September 1914 and Frank b. 1915 (J/A/S Nottingham) who died the same year. The pension record gives Ada's address as Blue Bell Hill Road, Nottingham. Ada married William Blatherwick in 1920 and they lived at 3 Carrington Terrace, Alfred Street, Nottingham.

Private William Harvey served with the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). William was killed in action on 17th July 1916. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
