John Austin Mann (junior) was born in 1896 in Nottingham he was the son of John Austin (senior) a bricklayer and Eliza Mann née Arnold, they lived at 34 Royal Oak Hill Carlton Road Nottingham. His father John Austin (senior) was born in 1868 in Chesterfield and his mother Eliza Arnold was born in 1869 in Nottingham, they were married in 1888 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children , 2 of whom sadly died in infancy, their surviving children were : Clara b1891, John Austin b1896, Gilbert b1900 (died 1901 1 yr old) Cyril b1903 and Phyliss b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at 34 Broad Ok Hill, Nottingham and are shown as John Austin 42 yrs head of the family a bricklayer, he is living with his wife Eliza 42 yrs and their children John 14 yrs , Cyril 8 yrs and Phyliss 4 yrs.

11th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John Austin Mann, enlisted in Nottingham , served with the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in France on 18th May 1915, he was killed in action on 11th April 1917. He is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm).
In memoriam notice published in the Nottingham Evening Post 11th April 1918 :- “MANN. – In memory of my dear son, Pte. J. A. Mann, Sherwood Foresters, killed by sniper April 11th, 1917.
