Samuel Edward Lee was born in 1892 the son of Samuel James a newsagent and Jane Elizabeth Lee née Hall and the brother of Percy Nathan, Arthur Henry, Ada Mary, George Leonard, Matthew William, John James and Charles Lee. They lived at 'Bridge House' Selston Nottinghamshire. Samuel James was born in 1860 at Selston, Jane Elizabeth Hall was born in 1860 at Great Gidding , Huntingdonshire, married in 1885 at Nottingham they went on to have 13 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood,
He was a miner (dayman).

Private Samuel Edward Lee enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Selston, he served with 'B' Coy 7th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He died on 24th October 1915 and is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
