Harold was born in 1891 in Nottingham and was the son of Herbert a warehouseman and Tracey Ann Simpkin née Townsend they lived at Belmont 137 Carlton Hill Nottingham. His father Herbert was born in 1862 in Lenton and his mother Tacey Ann Townsend was born in 1865 also in Lenton, they went on to marry in 1885 in Nottingham. They had 8 children sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911, their children, all born in Nottingham were Arthur b1889, Harold b1891, Ethel b1893, Walter b1897, May b1889 and Ada b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 137 Carlton Hill, Carlton and are shown as Hebert 49 yrs a warehouseman, he is living withhis wife Tacey Annie 46 yrs and their children , Harold 19 yrs a warehouseman, Ehtel 18 yrs a dressmaker, Walter 14 yrs an office boy May 12 yrs a scholar and Ada 9 yrs a scholar. Harold married his wife Anne Elizabeth Cole on 31st July 1912 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they went on to live at 26 Chatsworth Ave, Nottingham Road, Basford. They went on to have a son Harold Martin born 6th February 1914 in Nottingham. His wife later lived at Brassington Street, Clay Cross, Chesterfield.(C.W.G.C.) A letter dated 10th December 1918 was sent from the Ministry of Pensions to his widow Anne stating she would received a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week for herself and her one child to take effect from 16th December 1918.

Gunner Harold Simpkin, was called up for service on 10th August 1916 in Nottingham , he gave his age as 25 yrs and 104 days and his address as 26 Chatsworth Ave, Nottingham , his next of kin was his wife Anne Elizabeth of the same address his occupation was that of a warehouseman . He was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery . He embarked from Southampton on 30th November 1916 landing in Boulogne the same day. He was posted to the 77th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery from 8th October 1917. He was killed in action on 30th May 1918 and is buried in Berles New Military Cemetery.
