He was the son of Samuel and Annie Foster and the brother of Beatrice, Harry, Joseph Richard, Redvers, George and Frank Foster. In 1911 they lived at 159 Gordon Road, Nottingham. He was the husband of Emily May Foster (née Sims) of 3 Orby Terrace, Woodhouse Street, Nottingham. He was the father of Irene Foster.

He was reported missing on 29 April 1917 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
