George Grainger was born in 1887 at Hucknall and was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Hannah Grainger née White of 11 Sylvester Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father Samuel was born in 1854 at Bagthrope and his mother Hannah White was born in 1854 at Hucknall, they were married in 1874 their marriage wasa recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 7 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Robert b1874, William b1878, George b1887 and Bertie b1891, all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 11 Sylvester Street, Hucknall and are shown as Samuel 57 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Hannah 57 yrs and their children, George 24 yrs a coal miner hewer and Bertie 20 yrs a colliery labourer above ground.
He was a coal miner.

Private George Grainger enlisted at Hucknall he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action whilst serving on the canal bank near Ypres, 19th June 1917, age 30. He is buried at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot I, Row C, Grave 8.
