He was the son of Walter Arthur and Ruth Towle and the brother of Dorothy Grace, John Lawrence, Gertrude, Alice, Hilda and Florence Rebecca Towle. They lived at 15 Lavender Street Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham, but later moved to 44 Laurel Street, Dame Agnes Street, Nottingham.
He was a French polisher.

He enlisted at Derby and was formerly with the Sherwood Foresters, No. 105691. He died of wounds and was buried at Etretat Churchyard Extension.
Personal inscrption on CWGC headstone:'A loving son a brother kind beautiful memories left behind.' Nottingham Evening Post, ‘’Roll of Honour’, 25 September 1918 ‘Towle. Died of wounds received in action, September 6th (sic), Pte Herbert A Towle, East Surreys, aged 22, eldest son of Mrs Towle, 44 Laurel-street.
