George was born in 1886 at Hucknall and was the son of George a stone worker and the late Ruth Hardy née Bostock, of 13 George Street Hucknall. Both his parents were born in Ilkeston Derbyshire his father George in 1852 and his mother Ruth Bostock in 1848, they were married in Wakefield in 1869 and went on to have 9 children, Aaron b1869 Wakefield, William b1875 Whittington, Derbys, Annie b1878 Whittington, John b1878 Bulwell, Lizzie b1880 Hucknall, Henry b1884 Hucknall, George b1886 Hucknall, Moses b1888 Hucknall and Fred b1890 Hucknall. His mother Ruth died in 1908 the death was recorded in the Basford Registration District, she was 59 yrs of age. George married his wife Elizabeth Ann Fairbrother in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District , they lived at 70 Orchard Street, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. He was the father of George b1911 Gladys May born 25th August 1912, George Henry born 5th August 1915 and Harold Hardy born 13th July 1918 all the births were recorded in the Basford Registration District.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Lance Corporal George Hardy enlisted 22nd September 1915 at Hucknall. He gave his age as 30 yrs and 83 days, occupation as a coal miner and address as 70 Orchard Street, Hucknall. He served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, serving in France from 6th March 1916 to 27th November 1917. He was discharged from the Army on 17th July 1918 as being unfit for war service due to back problems. Awarded a Silver War Badge number B49462. He died on 26th September 1918 and is buried in Hucknall Cemetery (grave ref. C. North.1660).
