George Carter was born in 1893 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Thomas a farm labourer and Martha Ada Carter née Simpson of 30 Brougham Street Southwell Road Sneinton Nottingham he had a brother John born 1893 and sister Ada born 1900. In 1911 his widowed mother Martha is 51 yrs of age she is a lace clipper living at 2 Blucher Row, Poplar Street, Nottingham. In 1911 George has left the family home, he is shown as being 13 yrs of age and a schoolboy shoemaker and is living at Macclesfield Industrial School, Turnock Street, Macclesfield.

Private George Carter enlisted at Macclesfield, he initially served with the service number 9778 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he died of wounds on 11th October 1918 and is buried at Wellington Cemetery, Rieux-En-Cambresis
His brother John Thomas Carter served with the service number 15007 in the Grenadier Guards , he was killed in action on 1st December 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial
