John Ernest Hufton was born in 1889 at Ilkeston and was the eldest son of John a coal miner and Elizabeth Hufton née Davis of 50 James Street Hucknall Nottinghamshire. His father was born in 1864 at Ilkeston and his mother Elizabeth Agnes Davis was born in 1866 at Coalville, Leicestershire, they were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 14 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were John Ernest b1889 Ilkeston, Florence b1894 Ilkeston, Albert b1895 Ilkeston, Edith b1897 Ilkeston, Lily b1899 Hucknall, Elizabeth b1901 Hucknall, Sarah Ann b1904 Hucknall and Samuel b1907 Hucknall In the 1911 census the family are living at 50 James Street, Hucknall and are shown as John Hufton 47 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 45 yrs and their children, John Ernest 22 yrs a coal miner, Florence 17 yrs a bottle washer, Albert 16 yrs a coal miner, Edith 14 yrs a scholar, Lily 12 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 10 yrs a scholar, Sarah Ann 7 yrs a scholar and Samuel 4 years. John Ernest married his wife Florence Beatrice Henson in 1911 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District , they went on to have three children, John b1912, Doris b1913 and Connie b1915 they lived at 23 Linby Grove Hucknall Nottinghamshire.
He was employed as a miner.

2nd Bn Northumberland Fusiliers
Private John Ernest Hufton enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 2nd battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he landed in France on 10th March 1915. He was taken a prisoner on Saturday 8th May 1915 during the battle of Frezenburg. He died of illness whilst a prisoner of war on 16th October 1918 and is buried at Nzederzwehren Cemetery, Kessel, Germany grave reference V.D.15.
