Parents: Mark and Mary Elizabeth of 126 Westfield Lane, Mansfield. His brother, Ernest had also enlisted but was discharged as not likely to become an efficient soldier. In six weeks Ernest had struck a comrade, been drunk, urinated in the barracks and used obscene language.
In 1911 he was working as a pony driver underground aged 15.
