Charles Thomas was born in 1887 (O/N/D Peterborough), the son of George and Sarah Ball, who had at least one other child, James. In 1901 the family was living in Helpston, near Peterborough; George (42) a horsekeeper, Sarah (41), Charles (13) and James (7 b. Helpston). Also in the household was a boarder, Robert Dolby (43). Charles had moved to Nottinghamshire by 1911 and was working as a porter on the Midland Railway. He was living at 12 Quarry Lane, Mansfield as a boarder in the household of Henry Thompson. a goods guard on the Midland Railway, his wife and two children. Charles married Annie Marston (b. 28 April 1889), of 56 Blenheim Terrace, Mansfield, in 1917 (A/M/J Mansfield). Annie had previously been engaged to Thomas O'Gorman (also Gorman) who had been killed on 20 October 1914 while serving in the Lincolnshire Regiment (see record on this ROH). The widowed Annie married John W Tapster in 1921 (A/M/J Wakefield) and at the time the CWGC record was compiled was living at 36 Back Garden Street, Wakefield. There is a record of the death of an Annie Tapster (b. 1889) in 1963 (J/A/S Bury St Edmunds).
In 1911 he was a Midland Railway porter.

Charles is buried in Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium (grave ref. XIII.E.5).
CWGC headstone, personal inscription: 'Rest in Peace' CWGC: Son of George and Sarah Ball; husband of Annie Tapster (formerly Ball), of 36, Back Garden St., Wakefield. Native of Helpston, Northants. Registers of Soldiers' Effects: his widow Annie Ball (Tapster) was his legatee.
