Article published 8th November 1918 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times :- “DEATH OF PTE. G. HARRISON. “News has recently been received of the death in action of Private G. Harrison, a native of East Kirkby, and formerly in the Co-operative Stores there. “The following letter has been received by his widow from his officer:— “It is my very painful duty to inform you that on October 8th your husband, Pte. G. Harrison, was killed in action. Yon have the very deepest sympathy of the whole of his section, of whom I am the officer in charge. We had been many days in action before a shell unfortunately killed your husband, and three of his pals. Your husband was a great favourite with both officers and men. He died instantly. A brave and noble soldier who always did his duty, and was a good example to other men. The Section has undoubtedly lost one of its best men. We brought his body back from the line, and he is buried in the English cemetery at Ribecourt, near Cambrai. Any words of mine cannot express the great sympathy all officers and men of this company have for you. — Yours faithfully, A. C. CHAMPION, 2nd-Lieutenant. “Deceased enlisted in November, 1916, was trained at Newcastle and Grantham, crossing over to France in April, 1917. For some rears before joining he resided at Nottingham. Pte. Harrison was the eldest son of the late Mr. C. Harrison, of Lowmoor-road, East Kirkby, and married a daughter of the late Mr. Wm. Foster, of Alma Terrace, Chesterfield-road, Mansfield.” Above article is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918
