9th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Edward Kitchen joined the battalion on Gallipoli, 25 October 1915 as part of a draft of men replacing casualties. After 6 months in Egypt where the men saw the pyramids and swam in the Nile a move to France was made. After a period in a 'quiet' area the battalion moved to the Somme. Between the 6th and 12th September 1916, the battalion held the front line in the Thiepval area. Edward was killed during this tour of duty and was probably buried in Mash Valley Cemetery, being reinterred after the Armistice when the battlefield cemeteries were concentrated. He is buried in Ovillers Military Cemetery, grave I. C.2. John Morse
