Lionel Arthur Slatter

Lionel Arthur Slatter was born in 1890 at Cheltenham and was the son of the late James Frank a painter and canvasser and Emily Matilda Slatter nee Bowd of 8 Warwick Buildings Chetenham. His father James Frank was born in 1855 at Leckhampton, Cheltenham he died in 1914 his mother Emily Matilda Bowd was born in 1856 at Cheltenham, they were married in 1876 at Cheltenham, they went on to have 10 children, six sadly died in infancy or early childhood, Lionel married his wife Mabel Fell in Mansfield in 1910. they lived at 30 Spencer Street, Mansfield they had a son Lionel Albert born in 1911 at Mansfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 30 Spencer Street, Mansfield and are shown as Lionel Arthur 21 yrs a bookbinder he is living with his wife Mabel 18 yrs and their son Lionel Albert 1 month old. Following Lionel's death his widow re married to become Mabel Gittens,

The former bookbinder, he was the foreman of the bookbinding and machine ruling department in the printing office of Messrs. Plumbe and Richardson

Private Lionel Arthur Slatter, enlisted at Mansfield, he initially served with the service number 57273 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was serving with the 7th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, when he was killed in action on 11th January 1917. He is buried in Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval.
