James Winterbottom was born in 1871 at Sheffield and was the son of William a coal miner and grocer and Eliza Winterbottom née Wardell. His father William was born in 1824 At Saddleworth, Lancashire, his mother Eliza Wardell was born in 1840 at Longtoft, Yorkshire, they were married on 10th September 1867 at Scarborough and went on to have the following children, Alfred b1869 Darnall, Yorkshire, James 1871 Sheffield, Mary Ann b1873 Darnall and Julia b1876 Darnall. James married his wife Mary Jane Henstock (born 5th June 18730 in 1892 at Ambergate ) their marriage was recorded in the Sheffield registration district, they went on to have the following children, Julia May b1896 Sheffield, William b1897 Sheffield, Lydia Annie Elizabeth born 3rd May 1904 Shirebrook, Thomas Hedley born 18th February 1909 Shirebrook and Pansy born 26th November 1913 Shirebrook. In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Church Drive, Shirebrook and are shown as James 40 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Jane 37 yrs and their children, Julia May 15 yrs no occupation, William 14 yrs grocers errand boy, Lydia 6 yrs, Thomas 2 yrs and Pansy 5 months old. The family lived at 43 Burns Street Mansfield Woodhouse and 1 Priory Road, Mansfield Woodhouse. Following James's death his widow Mary Jane was awarded a pension of 23 shillings a week which commenced on 25th September 1916.
He was a coal miner hewer.

Private James Winterbottom enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Mansfield Woodhouse, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 12th March 1916 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
