John Joseph Whitehead was born in 1889 at Radford and was the only surviving son of Arthur Thomas a chimney sweep and Mary Ann Whitehead née Skinner of 31 Greek Street, Radford. Arthur Thomas and Mary Ann Skinner were both born in 1872 at Radford, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham, they went on to have 4 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 31 Greek Street, Nottingham, Arthur Thomas is 47 yrs and a chimney sweep he is living with his wife Mary Ann 47 yrs and their son John Joseph 22 yrs a hosiery packer.
He was a hosiery packer in 1911.

17th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment)
Private John Joseph Whitehead enlisted at Nottingham, whilst residing at Radford, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was reported missing 3 September 1916 and reported killed the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial
Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 14 August 1917: Whitehead. Missing since September 3rd 1916, now reported killed, Private JJ Whitehead Sherwood Foresters, age 27. Only son of AT and MA Whitehead, 31 Greek Street, Radford.
