Albert Sherrard was born in 1893 at Newhall and was the son of Abraham Sherrard a colliery lamp cleaner and his first wife the late Sarah Ann Sherrard née Kirk of 9 Trueman Street, Hucknall. His father Abraham was born in 1841 at Leek, Staffordshire, his mother Sarah Ann Kirk was born in 1853 at Walsall, Stafordshire she died on 21st April 1894, they were married on 16th January 1875 at St Johns Church, Newhall, they went on to have the following children, Charles b1874 ,William b1876, John b1878, Uriah b1881, Jane Ann b1883, Mary Ann b1885, Elizabeth Ann b1887 and Albert b1893 all were born at Newhall. In the 1911 census the family lived at 9 Truman Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as Abraham 66 yrs a widow and colliery lamp cleaner, he is living with his children, Elizabeth Ann 24 yrs a house keeper and Albert 17 yrs a brick layers labourer, he is living with Mary Walker 55 yrs a housekeeper widow and her children Kate Walker 17 yrs and Ada Walker 10 yrs a scholar. His father remarried in 1915 to his housekeeper Mary Ann Walker.

30703 Private Albert Sherrard entered theatre of War (France) after 1 January 1916 and was posted to the 16th battalion. It is possible that he went with them on 6 March 1916, when they landed at Le Havre. At some point he was posted to 9th battalion who after 1 July 1916 were also in France/Belgium. At 7 am on 18 June 1918 the battalion mounted a large raid (5 officers and 160 other ranks) on the enemy front line trench. It was a complete success with the capture of seven prisoners and one machine gun. It was also costly and two officers and five other ranks were killed, with eleven wounded. Albert is buried in grave III. E. 6., Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.
