William Smith (junior) was born in 1897 at Hucknall and was the son of William Smith (senior) a colliery labourer and Alice Louise Smith née Workman of 56 West Terrace, Hucknall. His father William (senior) was born in 1866 at Rotherham, his mother Alice Louise Workman was born in 1873 at Lydney, Gloucester they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their other child to survive was Gladys b1904 at Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family are living at 56 West Street, Hucknall and are shown as William 45 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Alice Louise 38 yrs and their children William 14 yrs a colliery labourer above ground and Gladys 7 yrs of age.
In the 1911 census he is working as a colliery labourer above ground.

8th Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps
Rifleman William Smith enlisted at Hucknall, he served with the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 24th August 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
