Ernest Straw was born in 1898 at Hucknall and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Hannah Maria Straw née Cutts of 55 West Terrace, Hucknall, Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1871 at Hucknall, his mother Hannah Maria Cutts was born in 1870 also at Hucknall, they were married in 1894 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Leonard Thomas b1896, Ernest b1898, Gladys b1900, Douglas b1901 and Sydney Straw b1906 all were born in Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family lived at 55 West Terrace Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and were shown as Thomas Straw 40 yrs a coal miner stall man, he is living with his wife Hannah Maria 41 yrs and their children, Leonard Thomas 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Ernest coal sorter on pit bank, Gladys 11 yrs a scholar, Douglas 10 yrs a scholar and Sydney 5 yrs of age.
He worked on the pit bank sorting coal in 1911 and was a collier upon his enlistment

Royal Field Artillery
Driver Ernest Straw enlisted on 30th August 1915 at Hucknall, his address waas 55 West Terrace, Hucknall, his next of kin was his father Thomas of the same address. He stated his religion was that of a Wesleyan and his occupation was that of a collier. He was posted to the Royal Field Artillery and served with 40th Division Ammunition Column. He landed in France on 19th January 1917 and died of bronco pneumonia at No. 21 Casualty Clearing Station, aged 19, on 16th February 1917 he is buried La Neuville Communal Cemetery, Corbie grave reference B 74,
