Royal Engineers
Swain attested 11/9/1916 and was drafted into the Northumberland Fusiliers TR Bn. He gave his age as 17 years 8 months but, born O/N/D/1899, was only 16. He was evidently transferred to the Royal Engineers and received a gunshot wound (fracture to 5th metacarpal bone) to his left hand 30/5/1918. He was treated at US Base Hospital No.1 AIF where the hand became 'swollen and badly infected'. He was discharged from the army 14/11/1919 aged 20 with 30% disability from the Royal Engineers Motor Cycle Corps.
No CWGC or UKSWD records. Free BMD lists only one possible match - John Swain died Nottingham J/F/M/1926 aged 24. It is probable that whoever registered Swain's death gave an incorrect age because J T Swain of Hucknall would have been 26 at the beginning of 1926. Primary source: Swain's ASR.
