John Ward (junior) was born in 1894 at Kirkby and was the son of the late John Ward (senior) and Harriet Ward née Allen of 45 Charles Street, Hucknall and later 60, Redan Street St Thomas, Ontario, Canada. His father John was born in 1856 at Gaddesby, Leicestershire, he died in 1919 in Nottingham aged 64 yrs, his mother Harriett Allen was born in 1868 at Whitwick Leicestershire, they were married in 1890 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children were Elsie b1892, John b1894, Eva b1897 all were born in Kirkby they had further children Richard Thomas b1899 Stapleford and Elizabeth b1901 Hucknall. In the 1911 census the family were living at 57 Belvoir Street, Hucknall and were shown as John 55 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Elsie 19 yrs a blouse machinist, John 17 yrs a coal miner ropeman, Eva 14 yrs working at home, Richard Thomas 12 yrs a scholar and Elizabeth 10 yrs a scholar. Following the death of John and his father John his mother Elizabeth emigrated to Canada, living at 60, Redan Street St Thomas, Ontario, Canada.

Royal Army Medical Corps
Private John Ward enlisted on 31st August 1914 at Hucknall, he gave his age as 21 yrs and 144 days, he stated he was a coal miner , he was posted to the Royal Army Medical Corps. He embarked from Southampton on 9th July 1915 landing the following day at Le Harve. It was whilst serving with the 46th Field Ambulance that he was wounded in action and died from his wounds on 24th July 1918. He is buried at Rovallieu French National Cemetery, Compiegne, France.
