He was the husband of Ethel Wardley (née Sampson) whom he married in 1915 (Sheffield registration district, Oct/Nov/Dec 1915). Ethel died aged 83 on 10 May 1973. Their daughter, Marjorie, who was born in 1916 (birth registered East Retford, Apr/May/Jun 1916), died on 5 September 1992 aged 76. Ethel was probably Ethel Bloom Sampson, the daughter of George and Annie E Sampson, who was born on 23 April 1890 in Upton, Lincolnshire, where the family was living. The family had moved to Askham, near Retford, by 1901. The sub registration district of East Retford is Tuxford, the nearest town to Milton. In 1911, Ethel (20) was a housemaid in the household of John Spencer Norvill, a cutlery manufacturer. Ethel and William were married in the registration district of Sheffield in 1915.

Gravestone inscription at Milton All Saints (Mausoleum) near Tuxford, Nottinghamshire: ‘In loving memory of Pte William Wardley, 2/4 York & Lancs Rgt. who died April 25th 1919 aged 27 years. Until the day break. Also of Ethel his wife died May 10th 1973, aged 83 years. Reunited. Also of Marjorie, their daughter, died 5th September 1992 aged 76 years.
